E-mail: aversiferreira@gmail.com The anatomical comparative studies among the primates are important for the investigation of ethology, evolution, taxonomy, and comprehension of tools by hominoids. Especially the anatomical knowledge of Cebus contributes to conservation of the species, and to development of surgical procedures and clinical treatments of these animals, as they frequently are victims of automobile accidents. Recent anatomical studies came to a wrong conclusion regarding behavioral traits of Cebus, ascribed to few data available in previous literature. Therefore, to provide anatomical data and to support the other sciences related to anatomy, and to develop surgical and/or clinical procedures, we described the nerves of the legs of Cebus foccusing on their position and trajectory, as wll as innerved muscles, and compared these results with those of humans and other primates. Eight adult capuchin specimens were used for this study. The anatomical comparative study of the leg’s nerves of Cebus demonstrated that, in general, structural organization of the nerves is similar among the four primates analyzed here (Cebus, chimpanzees, baboons and humans), which might be attributed to the fact that the all four primates have similar body structures. However, nerve trajectory and muscles innervation in Cebus was more similar to baboons.

E-mail: aversiferreira@gmail.com Os estudos anatômicos comparativos entre os primatas são importantes para pesquisas associadas com a etologia, evolução, taxonomia e compreensão dos usos de ferramentas pelos hominídeos. Especificamente, o conhecimento anatômico sobre Cebus contribui para sua própria conservação e para o desenvolvimento de procedimentos cirúrgicos e tratamentos clínicos destes animais, pois são frequentemente vítimas de acidentes automobilísticos. Recentemente, estudos sobre características comportamentais de Cebus indicaram conclusões erradas sobre sua anatomia, o que pode ser atribuído aos poucos dados disponíveis sobre a anatomia desses animais na literatura especializada. Portanto, para fornecer dados anatômicos e fornecer suporte para as outras ciências relacionadas com a anatomia e também desenvolver procedimentos cirúrgicos e/ou clínicos, foram descritos os nervos das pernas de Cebus com enfoque sobre a posição, a trajetória e os músculos inervados, e comparar esses resultados com os dos humanos modernos e outros primatas. Oito espécimes adultos de macacos-prego foram usados para este estudo. O estudo anatômico comparativo dos nervos da perna de Cebus demonstrou que, em geral, a organização estrutural dos nervos é semelhante entre os quatro primatas aqui analisados (Cebus, chimpanzés, babuínos e humanos modernos), o que pode ser atribuído ao fato de que os quatro primatas terem estruturas corporais semelhantes. No entanto, a trajetória dos nervos e a inervação dos músculos em Cebus o aproximam dos babuínos.

Dr. Lamartine Pinto de Avelar 1120, Catalão, GO 75704-020, Brazil. E-mail: aversiferreira@gmail.com Non-human primates have constituted an important group among animals subjected to various studies. Ethological, evolutionary and paleontological studies have revealed changes in anatomical structures linked to the evolution of primates, considered in studies on the comparative anatomy between Cebus libidinosus and other neotropical monkeys or those from the Old World, and the detailed knowledge on their anatomy may represent an important factor for their preservation and protection when the animals are brought to veterinary clinics after accidents or illnesses. In terms of veterinary importance, sometimes these animals arrive in the veterinary medical clinics after accidents, needing surgery or clinical treatment, but the little data available on anatomy has impaired the correct proceedings. The main justification for studies on C. libidinosus, is due to little information about the anatomy related to C. libidinosus in Brazilian and worldwide scientific literature. In this study, the distribution, enervation and path of the femoral and sciatic nerves of the pelvic limb (thigh) of C. libidinosus were studied and these results were compared with literature on the anatomy of humans, chimpanzees and baboons. In general, the enervation model of the four primates is identical, but in specific terms, the differences in enervations indicate evolution convergence closer to the branch of baboons in the evolutionary tree, and these data corroborate other comparative studies in relation to the same primates to vessels, muscles and nerves. In conclusion, the nerve organization in the thigh of C. libidinosus is identical to baboon, chimpanzee and homo, but more similar to baboon. The specific differences found indicate an ancient phylogenic origin to C. libidinosus and baboons (data corroborated by other studies).

Estudos etológicos, evolutivos e paleontológicos revelaram alterações das estruturas anatômicas ligada à evolução dos primatas, considerado em estudos sobre a anatomia comparativa entre Cebus libidinosus e outros primatas neotropicais ou provenientes do Velho Mundo, e as modalidades de conhecimento sobre sua anatomia pode representar um fator importante para a sua preservação e proteção quando os animais são levados às clínicas veterinárias após acidentes ou doenças. Em termos de importância veterinária, ás vezes esses animais chegam na clínica médica veterinária após acidentes, necessitando de cirurgia ou tratamento clínico, mas os poucos dados disponíveis sobre a anatomia tem dificultado o procedimento correto. A principal justificativa para os estudos sobre C. libidinosus é devido a pouca informação sobre sua anatomia na literatura científica no Brasil e no mundo. Neste trabalho, a distribuição, inervação e os trajetos dos nervos femoral e isquiático do membro pélvico (coxa) de C. libidinosus foram estudados e os resultados foram comparados com a literatura sobre a anatomia dos seres humanos, chimpanzés e babuínos. Em geral (Anatomia Macroscópica), o modelo de inervação dos quatro primatas é idêntico, mas em termos específicos, as diferenças nas inervações indicam uma convergência evolucionária em direção à árvore genealógica dos babuínos, dados corroborados por outros estudos comparativos em relação aos mesmos primatas para vasos, músculos e nervos. Em conclusão, a organização dos nervos na coxa de C. libidinosus é idêntico ao do babuíno, chimpanzé e homo, mas mais semelhante ao babuíno. As diferenças específicas encontradas indicam uma origem filogenética antiga para C. libidinosus e babuínos (dados corroborados por outros estudos).


#3 - Vaccination protocol and bacterial strain affect the serological response of beef calves against blackleg, 30(7):554-558

E-mail: isdutra@fmva.unesp.br The serological response of beef calves was evaluated with different vaccination regimens against blackleg, using an official strain (MT) and a field-collected strain of Clostridium chauvoei as antigens. Sixty calves were randomly allocated to four different groups and were submitted to distinct vaccination protocols with a commercial polyvalent vaccine. Group G1 was first vaccinated at four months of age and a booster shot was given after weaning, at eight months. Group G2 was given the first dose at eight months and a booster shot 30 days later. Group G3 was vaccinated only once at eight months and the control group was not vaccinated. These alternative vaccination regimens were proposed in an effort to adequately protect cattle under open-field farming conditions. Serological evaluations were made by Elisa at 4, 8, 9 and 10 months of age. Both groups receiving booster shots had a significantly increased serological response 30 days later. However, the serum IgG levels against C. chauvoei were significantly higher in the calves that were first vaccinated at four months. At 10 months, the two booster shot groups (G1 and G2) had similar serological responses, while the calves that were treated with a single dose of vaccine at weaning (G3) had a response that was similar to that of the control group. The serological response of the calves was significantly inferior at several of the evaluation times when the field strain of the bacteria was used as a challenge antigen instead of the official MT strain. The serological response of calves that are vaccinated twice was found to be satisfactory, independent of the first injection being made at four or eight months of age. It was also concluded that it would be useful to include local bacterial strains in commercial vaccine production.

[Esquemas de vacinação e cepa bacteriana influenciam na resposta sorológica contra o carbúnculo sintomático em bezerros de corte.] Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 30(7):554-558. E-mail: isdutra@fmva.unesp.br Foi avaliada a resposta sorológica de bezerros de corte submetidos a diferentes esquemas de vacinação contra o carbúnculo sintomático, empregando-se como antígenos duas cepas distintas de Clostridium chauvoei: uma oficial (MT) e a outra uma cepa de campo. Os animais (n=60) foram randomizados em quatro grupos (G1, G2, G3 e Controle) e submetidos a três protocolos distintos de vacinação com um produto comercial polivalente. O G1 foi primovacinado aos 4 meses de idade e recebeu o reforço após desmama (8 meses de idade). O G2 recebeu a primeira dose aos 8 meses de idade e reforço 30 dias após. O G3 foi vacinado somente aos 8 meses de idade e o Controle não foi vacinado. As avaliações sorológicas pelo ensaio imunoenzimático (Elisa) foram realizadas aos 4, 8, 9 e 10 meses de idade dos bezerros. Nos dois esquemas em que os animais receberam o booster (G1 e G2), houve um aumento significativo (p<0,05) da resposta sorológica quando foram avaliados 30 dias após. No entanto, os valores séricos de IgG contra C. chauvoei foram significativamente maiores nos animais primovacinados aos 4 meses de idade. Aos 10 meses, os dois grupos que receberam o reforço vacinal (G1 e G2) não diferiram entre si na resposta sorológica e os bezerros que receberam uma única dose de vacina na desmama (G3) não diferiu do Controle. A resposta sorológica dos bezerros foi significativamente inferior (p<0,05) em diversos momentos da avaliação, quando a cepa de campo foi empregada como antígeno e quando comparada à da cepa MT. Pode-se deduzir que a resposta sorológica dos bezerros vacinados aos 4 e 8 meses de idade foi satisfatória e que existiram diferenças significativas nos valores séricos de anticorpos contra C. chauvoei quando na avaliação foi empregada cepa de campo.

E-mail: flores@ccr.ufsm.br This paper reports the antibody response and fetal protection in pregnant cows conferred by an experimental vaccine containing two attenuated strains of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV-1 and BVDV-2). Cows (n=19) were vaccinated twice, with a 34-days-interval, with the experimental vaccine and together with non-vaccinated controls (n=18), were mated and challenged between days 60 and 90 of gestation by intranasal inoculation of four heterologous BVDV-1 and BVDV-2 isolates. The antibody response was evaluated by serum-neutralization tests performed at different intervals after vaccination (days 34, 78 and 138 post-vaccination [pv]). Fetal protection was monitored by ultrassonographic and clinical examination of the dams and fetuses during the rest of gestation; and through virological and serological examination of pre-colostral blood obtained from aborted and/or recently born fetuses/calves. At the day of challenge (day 138 pv), all vaccinated cows had neutralizing antibodies in high titers against BVDV-1 (1,280- ³10,240), and with one exception (titer 20), presented moderate to high titers to BVDV-2 (80-1,280). At the end of the monitoring, only three out of 18 control cows (16.6%) delivered healthy, virus-free calves. Fifteen non-vaccinated cows (83.3%) presented signs of fetal infection and/or had reproductive losses. Seven of these cows (38.8%) delivered virus-positive calves; five were healthy and survived (27.7%); two were premature or weak and lasted three and 15 days, respectively. The other eight cows (44.4%) aborted between day 30 post-challenge and the parturition; or delivered premature or stillbirth calves. In contrast, 17 out of 19 (89.4%) vaccinated cows delivery virus-free, healthy calves. One vaccinated cow aborted around day 130 post-challenge, yet this fetus could not be examined for the presence of virus. Another cow delivered a virus-positive calf (5.2%). In summary, the experimental vaccine induced adequate antibody titers in most animals and the immunological response induced by vaccination was able to prevent fetal infection and reproductive losses upon challenge with a pool of heterologous BVDV isolates. Hence, this experimental vaccine may be an attractive alternative for the prevention of reproductive losses associated with BVDV infection.
